What Impression are you Making? Tips for Being a Better Role Model

When it comes to being a positive role model, the old adage, “Actions speak louder than words,” rings true. Sometimes it is what you don’t say that has the strongest impact; though don’t let this discredit the verbal messages you send. As a leader, your ability to influence and motivate others is critical. They look to you for guidance and will emulate what they see and hear. So what impression are you making?

If you want to become a better role model, consider how your actions affect those around you and what they say about you and your values and expectations. Here are several areas to consider:

Time Management: Be punctual at the start of each day and each meeting. Come prepared to be productive. If you are waltzing in at the last minute (or late!) this can send the impression that other things were more important or that it is okay for others to show up late as well. Structure your day to maximize productivity and reduce downtime. If others see you focused and on task, it will motivate them to be as well. If they notice that you are checked out and doing other things aside from getting your work done, they may be more likely to slack off. Uphold this standard even when you think no one is watching.

Quality and Effort: When tackling projects, put forth your best effort. It may be something you have done a thousand times before, but demonstrate that high quality is essential every time. Avoid cutting corners or passing off your work to others. Take responsibility and be an active contributor and participant. Show that you value and take pride in your work and others will as well.

Respect: Positive role models treat others with respect and honesty. They hold true to their word and do what they say they will. Don’t make promises that you can’t keep in an effort to make others happy because it can backfire in the end. If you are unsure about something, say so, but then work to find the answer and have the integrity to get back to the person. If you are upfront and transparent in your actions, it will go a long way in building stronger relationships.

Rules: It should go without saying, but if you are expecting others to follow a specific set of rules and standards, you should be following them as well. Let others see that you do not hold yourself above them; you abide by the same guidelines and expectations. Others tend to be more conscious of their actions when they know everyone is held accountable without exception.

As a role model, you set the tone. Be vigilant about exhibiting the actions and behaviors that you expect from others. Consistency is key so that there is no confusion.
